Product Description

Two important gem discoveries occurred in the late 19th century- rare Green Garnets (Demantoid) were discovered in Russia in 1868, then in the early 1880’s three sources of gem grade Opal were discovered in Australia. By 1890 these gems were being used commonly in fine jewelry, and were often set together. The white base Opal in this ring actually has a strong pinfire play of color that is hard to see in photos. The Demantoids surround the Opal, and help bring out the green and gold hues in the gem. While the Opal is set with tiny claw prongs, each Demantoid is set in a thin milgrained bezel, also known as a collet setting. While many people think of halo rings as a modern trend, these ring styles were actually quite popular in Victorian Britain, and these antique rings are some of the more beautiful examples we see.

Details: 15k rosy yellow gold ring with 2.37ct Australian white Opal and .86ctw round Demantoid Garnet, British, circa 1895.
