Demantoid (from the Latin for “diamond-like”) is the name given to a rare green variety of Garnet. These gems were initially discovered in Russia in the 1880’s, but their rarity and small sizes meant that they were rarely used in jewelry. In the early 2000’s Demantoids were rediscovered in Africa, and while they aren’t quite as saturated as their Russian siblings, they make up for it with larger sizes, amazing brilliance, and stunning minty green color. Our favorite cut for Demantoid is the round brilliant cut, since it allows the gem to show off its extreme dispersion.
